#18 The race is still on at Self.com! (September 16)

We had so much fun watching Jennifer Lopez, SELF editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger and 3,200 other racers (including quite a few other celebrities!) compete in last weekend’s Nautica Malibu Triathlon that we don’t want the excitement to end. Keep checking back this week as we post more of our favorite moments from the event.

We love how ecstatic and proud Jennifer looked when she finished. The crowd was cheering and yelling “Good job, JLo!” Will she do another triathlon in the future? “She deserves a break for now!” said Gunnar Peterson, her trainer. “But I asked and she said, ‘That remains to be seen.’ She’s such a passionate person. She goes after everything with so much, and there’s so much that she does and explores. I wouldn’t be surprised if she did, or if she moved on to another goal.”

Jennifer and her team arrived at the back entrance, on the north end of Malibu’s Zuma Beach. We seemed to be the only photographer in sight!

Husband Marc Anthony was incredibly supportive (even though he was a little nervous for Jennifer). They kissed and hugged between every leg of the race.

Jennifer shared the celebrity transition area with Matthew McConaughey, Eliza Dushku, Scott Foley and Heather Tom from The Bold and the Beautiful, among others.

She was in great spirits from the get-go and introduced herself to other racers.

Celebs competing in a relay transitioned in the area on the other side of the press box. That’s Felicity Huffman in coral, the back of Mad Men’s Jon Hamm (in the blue and white sweatshirt and hat), who swam, and Anna Kournikova (in pink, with her hair in a braid). We also saw William H. Macy, Mark Paul Gosselaar, Tiffani Thiessen (a Saved By the Bell reunion, perhaps!?) and High School Musical’s Monique Coleman.

Lucy helped calm Jennifer’s nerves about swimming in the chilly, choppy Pacific. “You’re going to do great! Just breathe!” she told her.

#17 - Congrats, Jennifer! (September 15)
Mother of twins, actress, recording artist, entrepreneur and now (drum roll, please) triathlete! Yesterday SELF’s Most Inspiring Woman for 2008, Jennifer Lopez, finished the Nautica Malibu Triathlon in 2 hours, 23 minutes, 38 seconds and—perhaps even more impressive—with a huge smile on her face.

For weeks, SELF has been following Jennifer as she trained for the tri, which she was doing to raise money for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. When the day finally arrived, we were a bit groggy when we hit Malibu’s Zuma Beach at a chilly, hazy 4:45 A.M., but excitement took over as the race’s 3,200 participants, including SELF editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger, who had raced the Olympic distance the day before as well (and medaled!), descended on the beach. Adding to the buzz: tons of paparazzi. At the media check-in booth, we overheard a few wondering if Jennifer would show. We just smiled, knowing that there was no “if” involved. She’d be there.

At about 6:30 A.M., Jennifer snuck into the beach from the back entrance with her trainer, Gunnar Peterson, and husband, Marc Anthony. “Pray for me!” she joked with us as she got out of the car, looking excited and maybe a wee bit nervous. She posed for a quick prerace picture, (see above) and then headed to her spot in the transition area. After changing into her wetsuit (with strategically placed towels providing a little privacy from the press box less than 10 feet away!), Jennifer made her way to the start. There she met up with Lucy for a hug and final pep talk, chatted with fellow racer Matthew McConaughey (remember how cute they were together in The Wedding Planner?) and waited for the starting gun with other celeb racers like Eliza Dushku, Jon Cryer and Mad Men’s Jon Hamm.

Jennifer Lopez Finishes Triathlon in 2 1/2 Hours

Jennifer Lopez with SELF magazine’s editor-in-chief
Lucy Danziger and personal trainer Gunnar Peterson
after one of the triathlon trainings.

Congratulations from OJF.com!

Jennifer Lopez completed the Nautica Malibu Triathlon in about 2 1/2 hours Sunday.

The singer, 39, pumped her arms in the air and smiled broadly as she crossed the finish line of the swimming-running-biking event.

Husband Marc Anthony was on the sidelines being supportive. The couple kissed between the biking and running portions of the race.

Fans and fellow participants were seen cheering on Lopez and giving her high-fives.

After finishing, Lopez joined her family and Matthew McConaughey, who came in before her, in the VIP area. McConaughey was accompanied by his girlfriend Camila Alves and their newborn son Levi.

Lopez and Anthony are expected to return to NYC after the event to host his 40th birthday bash Sunday night.

Lopez was inspired to run a triathlon while eight months pregnant with twins Max and Emme, who were born in February.

“I was beached like a whale,” Lopez — Self magazine’s Most Inspiring Woman of 2008 — said on ABC’s Good Morning America last month.

“I was watching TV, and I saw a triathlon and I said, ‘You know what? I think I could do that, that would be great for me to do. Maybe I’ll do it this year,’” she explained.

“Swimming is a killer,” Lopez admitted. “I’m not going to lie.”

She also joked that she is determined to finish the race even if she “has to crawl across that finish line.”

Lopez’ run raised money for the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.

#16 - Good Luck, Jennifer (september 13)
It’s finally here! SELF has spent the last several weeks tracking (and being totally inspired by) Jennifer Lopez as she trains for her first triathlon to raise money for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, and she’s already in Malibu for tomorrow’s race.

“Am I ready? I don’t know what ready is! I’m certainly willing. I feel like I’m going to be OK stamina wise. I was doing some pretty long workouts. It’s the elements I can’t control that will be the challenging, scary parts of the race. I know there might be things out there that I’m not ready for. But I know I can do it. I have the head and heart for this for sure.

“There is one thing in each part of the race that I hope for. With swimming, it’s that I survive the water. With biking, it’s that I don’t fall and have to get back up and keep going with a bloody leg or something. And with the run, which is the easiest for me, I hope I don’t get a cramp. If everything could just go perfect in that way….

“I’ve really enjoyed the training. I’ve never done anything as physically taxing as this in my life. It feels good. I’ve always loved working out and loved sports. But sometimes, working out sort of felt like work. Even though there would be a goal at the end in a sense that I had an appearance or something, this has been more like rehearsing for a concert. I have to prove something at the end. I like that.

“I don’t really have any rituals I do before a concert or anything like this. I just say a prayer and ask God to carry me through. And that usually works really well for me.”

#15 - Mental fitness (September 12)
The swimming leg of a triathlon is usually everybody’s toughest, Lucy Danziger, SELF’s editor-in-chief, told Jennifer Lopez recently. Jennifer is training for her first triathlon—only two days away!—which she’s doing to raise money for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. She’s prepared physically to swim probably twice the half-mile distance, but she’s still working on the mental side of hitting the Pacific during Sunday’s race.

“I’ve been to beaches, but I’ve never swum like this before. When we were out at Jones Beach [on Long Island] for an open-water swim, we were really far from shore. I’m not used to that. I’m from the Bronx! When I was growing up, there was no going out in the ocean. My mother hated the beach. My dad, too. Being in the deep water, far out, is the one mental thing I’ve got to get past.

“I wish I could just do the swim leg really fast, but I don’t think I’m capable of swimming really fast. I have great stamina and I’m in good shape. But when I’m in the water, there are all these things going through my head: I hope I don’t drown! I just want to survive! Maybe during the race, I’ll just grab on to somebody’s foot. Somebody who swims really fast, and I’ll just hang on!

“Seriously, though, for me, the water part is about making it through. I know there are going to be a ton of people out there with me, and that there are kayaks with lifeguards and that it’s going to be fine. I just have to get my rhythm. I know I can do it. I have no choice, I have to do it.”

We love how real and relatable Jennifer is. She is one of the biggest celebrities in the world, but when it comes to training, she has the same worries as anyone. What sets her apart is her awesome drive. By telling yourself that quitting isn’t an option, you can achieve your goals, whatever they may be.

Keep checking back to read more about Jennifer’s triathlon training progress and charity initiatives.

#14 - Finding Balance (September 11)
At SELF, we talk a lot about making time for yourself. It’s our goal to help you find ways to look, feel and be the best you can be. Women tend to get so busy taking care of everyone and everything else that we don’t allow ourselves the opportunity to do the things we need to recharge or feel good. In training for her first triathlon just six months after having twins, Jennifer Lopez, now more than ever, is discovering what it takes to manage her family and work life, plus training sessions to reach her goal of completing the race and raising as much money as possible for charity. It’s never easy, but her dedication shows us SELF made the right choice for 2008’s Most Inspiring Woman.

One of the best examples we heard came from Gunnar Peterson, Jennifer’s trainer: “We were in Milan a few months ago. “Marc [Anthony, Jennifer's husband] received the key to the city. She was up early, attended the ceremony, business meetings and press interviews and she was in and out of the hotel with the babies. But after all that, we went to a public gym at 10:30 at night. Most people would have said, ‘Whew, crazy day, let’s bag it.’ Not Jennifer.”

With the babies, it’s hard. I have to pick and choose my opportunities because I want to spend as much time with them as I can. But I also have to say, OK, I can take an hour for myself and do my training, which is good for me. I know that I need it. But I never let my desire to train or my other goals get too crazy that they will keep me from my babies. I will work to fit in my training sessions so I’ll be ready for whatever I’m going for, so that I’m fulfilled in that way, too. I think it’s important for all women to have that balance. #13 - Jennifer versus the jellyfish (September 10)

One of the coolest things we’ve discovered about Jennifer Lopez as she trains for her first triathlon (which she’s doing to raise money for Childrens Hospital Los Angeles) is how willing she’s been to step—and swim and bike and run!—out of her comfort zone to reach her goal. “I never swam in my life before training!” Jennifer told SELF. “But I love a challenge.” Recently, she faced one of her biggest yet: swimming in a choppy ocean teeming with jellyfish.
