Jennifer has you covered

Maybe it was wishful thinking. For a while, fashion industry insiders were predicting the ubiquitous celebrity fashion line might start to fade away. Not yet. “Stars are more active in it than ever,” says WWD editor Julee Greenberg. And for fall: “Dozens more.” Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kylie Minogue and even Paris Hilton are among stars jumping into the fashion fray this year. The M by Madonna line of clothing at H&M launched with great fanfare. They follow stars such as Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Jennifer Lopez and Gwen Stefani, who were on the leading edge and now have fashion lines that are still holding strong. A closer look at J-Lo’s spring/summer line and others coming for fall:

JLo by Jennifer Lopez - Jennifer Lopez
What: JLo By Jennifer Lopez, the singer’s 6-year-old line, offers low-priced fashions for juniors. The singer also has a new line of high-end fashion called justsweet, with status denim items, accessories and casual wear for older customers. Lopez was wearing justsweet clothing April 10 on American Idol. Prices range from $29 (for bangles) to $198 (leather bomber jacket).
When/where: JLo is in Macy’s and at shopjlo.com in August; justsweet will be in department stores in August.
Greenberg says: The summer JLo line is a “change for the better,” with Lopez overseeing every detail. “It’s a real reflection of Jennifer.”

Angela Bassett and Jennifer Lopez will judge you

Actors Angela Bassett and Jennifer Lopez will be two of the judges of the upcoming LMN Student Filmmaker Competition, a nationwide contest (co-produced by Lifetime Movie Network, The Hollywood Reporter, New York Women in Film & Television, WMA and Women in Film) honoring the best short films by female film students in the U.S.

The contest is open to all female film students (including executive producers, producers, writers, cinematographers and editors) and is designed to “encourage and discover the next generation of female filmmakers.” Also judging the contest are producers Lauren Shuler Donner (the X-Men movies) and Gale Anne Hurd (Terminator 3, Æon Flux), and, director Mimi Leder (The Peacemaker, Pay It Forward).

Citing the dismal employment stats for women in film (in 2005 women comprised 17% of all directors, executive producers, producers, writers, cinematographers and editors working on the top 250 domestic-grossing film–the same percentage as in 1998) as the driving force behind the contest, Lifetime Executive VP and GM Louise Henry Bryson said, “This is the same percentage of women employed in these roles in 1998. Through this competition, we hope to grow that percentage by helping to find the next great women filmmakers who will make important contributions to the Hollywood community” (hopefully, more important contributions than Terminator 3, Æon Flux, The Peacemaker, and Pay It Forward).

The first-and second-place winners will have their films screened at a special program curated by NYWIFT at the 2007 Hamptons International Film Festival in October and will be invited to attend the 2007 Women in Entertainment Power 100 Breakfast hosted by THR and Lifetime Networks in December.

The winning films will be featured on Lifetime and will be shown in their entirety on the Lifetime website. The first- and second-place winners as well as two runners-up will also receive cash prizes and meet with representatives of WMA. The competition runs through July 16, with the winners to be announced in October. For more information, visit LMN.tv/studentfilmmakers.

Jennifer to Testify Over ‘South Beach’ Lawsuit

Filed under: News Articles by Imko

A New York judge had ordered Jennifer Lopez to submit to a deposition over a lawsuit regarding her cancelled TV drama South Beach. Writer Jack Bunick sued six defendants, including Lopez and U.S. broadcasters UPN and CBS Television, claiming the makers of the show had stolen his idea from 1999 from a pilot episode of a programme called South Beach Miami. In February, the Latina beauty’s lawyer Orin Snyder argued that although Lopez was an executive producer of South Beach, she had minimal involvement in the creation and development of the show and was brought in later to “lend celebrity to the show”.

Snyder told U.S. Magistrate Judge Henry Pitman that Bunick had sued Lopez for “for tactical reasons, in an apparent attempt to obtain some perceived leverage by targetting and harassing a celebrity in a case where she has no meaningful testimony to give and no legitimate reason for being named as a defendant in the first place”. Bunick’s lawyer Sheldon Farber fired back, “Her celebrity is not a shield for her to use to avoid direct testimony in a case in which she has not been named frivolously.

“I am unaware that one of the perks of fame is protection from legal process. She may be inconvenienced by an appearance at a deposition. I can assure the court that I will not ask for her autograph.” Judge Pitman has ordered Lopez to make herself available to lawyers in the case before June 11. Bunick’s lawsuit is seeking unspecified monetary damages and an injunction banning any future broadcasts of South Beach, which was cancelled in February 2006 after only eight episodes.
